Portland Quaker Charged with Assaulting Federal Officer During Anti-ICE Protest
A man, Robert Jacob Hoopes, has been charged with assaulting a federal officer and damaging federal property following an anti-ICE protest in Portland, Oregon. His father described him as a “lifelong Quaker” deeply committed to pacifism.
The incident occurred on June 14 when Hoopes allegedly threw rocks at an ICE facility, striking an officer and causing serious injury. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon has charged Hoopes with aggravated assault and destruction of federal property. His father and roommate have emphasized his dedication to non-violence, though the charges have sparked debate over the actions taken during the protest.
During the protest, Hoopes and two other individuals were reportedly seen using a stop sign as a battering ram and causing “major damage” to the building’s main entrance. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hoopes faces up to 20 years in federal prison for the aggravated assault charge and up to 10 years in prison for damaging federal property.
Hoopes’ father, Tom, expressed his disbelief at the charges, stating, “Jacob is a lifelong Quaker who is deeply committed to pacifism. He’s an organic gardener and the soul of kindness.” Despite his father’s claims, the government has proceeded with federal charges against Hoopes, highlighting the serious nature of the alleged actions.
The roommate of Hoopes also spoke out, describing the event as a “flood of armed officers race into our driveway and charge at our house with assault rifles.” This incident has sparked discussion on the tensions between law enforcement and protesters, particularly in the context of anti-ICE demonstrations.
Magistrate Judge Youlee Yim You granted Hoopes pretrial release at his first hearing, going against the federal prosecutors’ request. This decision has raised questions about the balance between legal proceedings and the individuals’ rights, further adding to the complexity of the case.
This case exemplifies the complex interplay between personal beliefs, the law, and the impact of public demonstrations. As the legal process unfolds, the community and legal experts continue to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the alleged actions.
