President Volodymyr Zelensky has officially signed a new law that permits citizens over the age of 60 to join Ukraine’s military during wartime. This initiative allows older volunteers to serve in non-combat and specialized roles, such to logistics, communications, and medical support, thereby expanding the country’s recruitment pool.
The decision comes amid continued manpower shortages within Ukraine’s armed forces, which have been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict with Russia. With many younger citizens already serving or being drafted, the new law is intended to encourage older citizens to contribute to the war effort in ways that are less physically demanding but still vital to the nation’s defense.
While the law does not require older citizens to enlist, it provides them with the option to volunteer, particularly in roles that do not involve direct combat. This approach is designed to ensure the safety of older volunteers while still addressing the critical need for additional personnel in the military.
