European Solidarity Proposes Alternative Bill to Restore NABU and SAPO Independence

The European Solidarity faction has submitted an alternative bill to the presidential proposal in the Verkhovna Rada, aiming to restore the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO). The faction’s co-chair, MP Iryna Gerashchenko, announced the move, highlighting the importance of maintaining these institutions’ autonomy to ensure effective anti-corruption efforts.

Gerashchenko emphasized that the current governance structure of NABU and SAPO has raised concerns about their ability to function without political influence. She stated that restoring their independence is crucial for upholding the rule of law and preventing corruption within the highest levels of government. This proposal marks the latest development in the ongoing debate over the role and operational independence of these key anti-corruption agencies in Ukraine.

The introduction of the alternative bill comes amid heightened scrutiny of the executive branch’s handling of these institutions. Opposition parties and civil society groups have called for more transparency in the decision-making processes involving NABU and SAPO. The European Solidarity faction’s initiative underscores the growing demand for systemic reforms to enhance accountability and combat corruption effectively across Ukraine’s political landscape.
