Darién Gap Migrant Crossings Plummet to Near Zero Amid Trump Crackdown

Migrant crossings at Panama’s Darién Gap have dropped from a monthly peak of 82,000 during the Biden administration to just 10 in June, according to figures released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Panama’s National Migration Service. The sharp decline follows months of coordinated enforcement measures, including Trump’s mass deportation campaign and Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino’s push to shut down the deadly route.

Officials describe the Darién Gap as a “notorious” transit route for migrants, exposing them to dangers like sexual abuse, trafficking, and exploitation. The unprecedented drop in crossings has been attributed to Trump’s immigration policies and Mulino’s efforts to secure the area. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), alongside Panama’s National Migration Service, reported the dramatic decline in crossings, emphasizing the effectiveness of the administration’s measures.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the administration is sending a clear message: “America’s borders are closed to lawbreakers.” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson added that the “world is hearing our message that America’s borders are closed to lawbreakers,” with Trump’s policies deterring migrants before they even begin their perilous journey.

The Trump administration has also launched initiatives to encourage self-deportation through the CBP Home App, offering financial incentives for undocumented immigrants to voluntarily depart the U.S. The program provides cash bonuses and cost-free travel to those who use the app to leave the country. Officials believe this approach helps reduce the number of migrants attempting illegal entry.

Experts warn that while the drop in crossings is significant, the long-term impact remains questionable. The administration continues to focus on removing unauthorized immigrants and maintaining border security. With increased patrols, deportation efforts, and the CBP Home App initiative, the U.S. aims to reinforce its stance on immigration policies and deter further unlawful entry.
