A 54-year-old man from Polk County, Tennessee, has been arrested and charged with 11 criminal offenses, including an array of attempted murder and weapons violations, following an explosive incident during his arrest. According to law enforcement authorities, Kevin Wade O’Neal was arrested on Friday after being located in his home. The officers were already present at his residence due to warrants for his arrest, which stemmed from his past threats toward public officials and law enforcement personnel in Polk County. When the officers arrived, they contacted O’Neal and attempted to place him in custody. However, during the process, the officers noticed a smoldering object inside the room, leading them to believe they were dealing with an improvised explosive device (IED).
In response, the officers quickly evacuated the premises, prompting the involvement of the Chattanooga Police Department Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explossives (ATF). These agencies executed a search warrant at O’Neal’s home, where they discovered 14 IEDs, which appeared to be the result of O’Neal’s alleged attempt to detonate them during the arrest. O’Neal has been charged with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder for the alleged attempted murders of nine detectives and deputies who were present during the arrest.
