Microsoft’s AI coding assistant, GitHub Copilot, has attracted 5 million new users in the last three months, pushing its total user base to 20 million. This growth highlights the tool’s increasing popularity across the technology sector. According to a GitHub spokesperson, the tool’s adoption by Fortune 100 companies has grown by 75% compared to last quarter, underscoring its significance in the enterprise market. Microsoft reported that GitHub Copilot is now a larger business than all of GitHub was when Microsoft acquired it in 2018. The company also noted that 90% of Fortune 100 companies use the tool, further emphasizing its widespread adoption. Despite this growth, Microsoft has not disclosed how many of these users continue to use the tool regularly, suggesting that while the initial adoption is high, retention rates may be lower. The product’s expansion into the enterprise market continues to show positive momentum, with Nadella’s remarks in 2024 indicating its significance as a key component of Microsoft’s business strategy.
