Shipwreck Explorer Dies in Deep-Sea Dive Off Massachusetts Coast

Joe Mazraani, 48, a renowned shipwreck explorer and criminal defense attorney, died during a deep-sea dive off the Massachusetts coast as the investigation into his death continues. The dive company, Atlantic Wreck Salvage, stated that his death was attributed to a medical emergency, with no indications pointing to diver error or equipment failure.

Mazraani was diving approximately 200 miles offshore on the eastern edge of Georges Bank to explore a shipwreck his team called the Big Engine Steamer when he died on July 29, according to a statement released by Atlantic Wreck Salvage on Facebook. The company noted that the dive was conducted under normal conditions, and all signs pointed to a sudden medical issue.

Mazraani, who co-owned Atlantic Wreck Salvage with his wife, Jennifer Sellitti, was known for his extensive work in exploring shipwrecks. His team had previously explored the RMS Lusitania, HMHS Britannic, and the SS Andrea Doria. His passion for underwater exploration was matched by his dedication to justice, as he was also a criminal defense attorney.

As a defense attorney, Mazraani was instrumental in securing the exoneration of Timothy Puskas in 2024 after Puskas had been wrongfully convicted of murder in the death of Rutgers student William McCaw. Puskas had served 10 years of a 40-year sentence before Mazraani’s efforts led to his release.

His wife, Jennifer Sellitti, who is also a prominent public defender in New Jersey, expressed her deep grief in a statement. She described Mazraani as a ‘larger than life’ individual, highlighting his kindness, compassion, and generosity. ‘He was a mentor and a student, a friend, brother, son, and partner. Whether motoring aboard D/V Tenacious, diving into deep and dangerous water, or defending his clients in court, Joe demanded the best of everyone around him,’ she wrote.

The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender also paid tribute to Mazraani, describing him as ‘fearless, kind, and deeply committed to justice.’ The statement noted that the office’s hearts were with his loved ones as they mourn his passing.
