Digital Foundry, known for its in-depth technical analysis of gaming hardware, has officially become an independent entity. The publication, which has long been celebrated for its authoritative insights into game consoles, has now separated from IGN ownership. Founder Richard Leadbetter has purchased the outlet and its complete archives, signaling a significant shift in the publishing landscape for gaming analysis. Leadbetter, who had previously retained 50% ownership since selling half to Eurogamer in 2015, has acquired an additional 25% from IGN while investor Rupert Loman, Eurogamer’s original co-founder, purchased the remaining quarter. The five-person team will now operate independently, maintaining its YouTube channel with 1.5 million subscribers and Patreon support generating approximately $200,000 annually. The publication plans to develop a full website for its written content and expand its coverage while keeping most content free. This move is seen as a bold step to ensure the continued growth and relevance of Digital Foundry in the competitive world of gaming journalism.
