Teacher Accused of Hiking Murders at Devil’s Den State Park

On July 26, a tragic incident occurred at Devil’s Den State Park in Washington County, Arkansas, where a 28-year-old teacher, Andrew James McGann, is accused of killing a young married couple, Cristen Amanda Brink and David Brink, while they were on a hiking trip with their children. The Arkansas State Police, led by Director Col. Mike Hagar, described the incident as a random attack with no evidence of a known connection between the suspect and the victims.

McGann, who had passed all necessary background checks for his teaching role and had no prior criminal record, confessed to the murders during an interview with investigators. Blood found at the crime scene, along with DNA evidence, was used to link McGann to the alleged crimes. Despite his clean background, McGann had faced issues with his teaching career, including complaints from a former student’s mother about his inappropriate behavior towards female students in his class, leading to his administrative leave and eventual resignation.

The Brink family, who had recently relocated from South Dakota to Arkansas, were on a family outing at the popular state park when the tragedy occurred. The couple’s two daughters, aged 7 and 9, were reportedly emotionally distressed but not harmed. Authorities noted that there was no indication the children were targeted in the attack. McGann was arrested at a Springdale, Arkansas, barbershop on August 30 after being identified through the DNA evidence. He has been charged with two counts of capital murder and is currently in jail without bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for August 25.
