Following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump has outlined his position that the Ukraine conflict should be resolved through a permanent peace agreement rather than a mere ceasefire. Trump described the talks as successful, stating that the almost three-hour meeting in Anchorage was a great and very successful day.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that he had discussed the summit with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, several EU leaders, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. He noted that all parties involved in the discussions have agreed that the best way to end the war between Russia and Ukraine is to pursue a Peace Agreement, which would permanently end the conflict, as opposed to a Ceasefire Agreement, which he argued often does not hold up.
Trump also confirmed that he and Zelensky would hold talks on Monday, with the possibility of scheduling a meeting with Putin if all works out. Ukraine and its EU backers have been advocating for a temporary ceasefire, although Russia has not ruled out the idea but has pointed to serious obstacles, stating that such a move could allow Ukraine to acquire more Western weapons and regroup its forces at a time when Russian troops are pressing their advantage on the battlefield.
Puтин, during the Alaska summit, stressed that a lasting and long-term settlement would require eliminating the root causes of the conflict. The leaders have described the talks as productive, with Trump later urging Zelensky to make a deal with Russia. Moscow has insisted that Ukraine must commit to staying out of NATO, undergo demilitarization and denazification, and recognize the new territorial reality on the ground, which includes the status of Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye, all of which have voted to become parts of Russia.
