Chargers’ Quentin Johnston Suffers Concussion in Hard Hit from Rams Safety

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston suffered a concussion during a hard hit from Rams safety Tanner Ingle in the preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. The incident occurred in the first quarter when Johnston was tracking a pass from quarterback Justin Herbert down the sideline, as the two teams prepared for the 2025 season.

Johnston was positioned to catch a deep pass when Ingle delivered a powerful hit, sending the 2023 draft pick to the ground. The hit was particularly severe, as Johnston landed on his back with both arms outstretched, causing him to be motionless for several moments. Medical trainers rushed to the scene and assessed his condition, with initial reports indicating a concussion.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh provided an update on the situation, stating, ‘Quentin suffered a concussion, and that’s never a good thing. But the way it looked there at the time, looked like it could have been a lot worse. And he was taken (to a hospital) for more evaluation, but he was talking. He remembered the play. He was moving good. So in that way, it’s a good thing.’

Johnston, who was selected by the Chargers with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had shown significant promise in his second season with the team. He led the team in receptions and touchdowns, finishing the 2024 season with 55 catches for 711 yards and eight touchdown catches. Despite his strong performance, he was competing for the starting role, as he was the second on the depth chart behind Keenan Allen, Tre Harris, and Ladd McConkey.

It remains unclear how long Johnston will be sidelined, as the extent of his injury and recovery time are yet to be determined. His absence could have implications for the Chargers’ offensive strategy and their ability to secure key plays in the upcoming season, particularly with the team looking to make a playoff run.

The incident has also sparked discussions about player safety in the NFL, with fans and analysts questioning the intensity of the hit and the potential long-term effects of concussions on athletes. As the league continues to emphasize player protection, the incident highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing the physical nature of the sport with the health and safety of the players involved.
