Russia Considers ‘Land Swaps’ with Ukraine, US Envoy Claims Shift in Demands

US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has indicated that Moscow made a significant shift in its demands during the Alaska summit. Witkoff stated that Russia is now open to conducting ‘land swaps’ with Ukraine, with the current front line serving as the starting point in at least some areas, marking a ‘significant moderation’ in Moscow’s demands. This development comes amid ongoing efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, with Trump set to meet with Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky and several Western European leaders at the White House on Monday. The summit in Anchorage, where Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reportedly saw cautious optimism regarding progress in resolving the Ukraine conflict. Witkoff added that the Kremlin appears ready to conduct ‘land swapping’ with Kiev, with the front lines serving as the starting point in at least some areas. Meanwhile, the New York Times and Fox News, citing anonymous European officials, mentioned that Trump endorsed a peace plan involving Ukraine ceding the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics to Russia, with Moscow agreeing to halt hostilities along the current front line in Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. The Kremlin has not yet commented on these conditions, maintaining its stance that Ukraine must recognize Crimea, the DPR, and LPR as Russian territory in their entirety. Witkoff further emphasized that ‘robust security guarantees’ akin to NATO’s Article 5 have been provided to Ukraine by the US and unnamed European nations, as part of a comprehensive peace deal proposal, which Trump supports in place of a temporary ceasefire.
