Nicaraguan Man Faces Enhanced DUI Charges in Florida for Hit-and-Run

A Nicaraguan man in the United States illegally is facing ‘enhanced’ charges in Florida for a drunken hit-and-run incident that occurred over the weekend, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Roberto Sandobal-Lopez, 34, was arrested after crashing his white Honda into a fence in Winter Haven and fleeing the scene. deputies were alerted to the crash after witnesses called the sheriff’s office. When deputies located Sandobal-Lopez shortly after the crash, they determined he was intoxicated, with watery and bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. During a breath test, he registered BAC levels of 0.13 and 0.124. Field sobriety tests also revealed several signs of impairment. Sandobal-Lopez was taken to Polk County Jail and charged with DUI with property damage, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of the crash with property damage, and not having a driver’s license. His charges have been upgraded due to his undocumented status, making the DUI with property damage a third-degree felony. Sheriff Grady Judd noted that Sandobal-Lopez will remain in jail until he is picked up by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Judd criticized Sandobal-Lopez for walking away from the scene and emphasized the seriousness of being in the U.S. illegally, which can lead to enhanced criminal charges. The sheriff highlighted that in Florida, a person’s immigration status affects the severity of charges, making Sandobal-Lopez’s case a third-degree felony because of the property damage while driving under the influence.
