DeSantis Honors Jimmy Buffett and Other Notable Floridians with Posthumous Freedom Medal

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has posthumously awarded five prominent Floridians, including legendary singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, with the Governor’s Medal of Freedom. The awards were given to former politicians such as Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Bob Graham, Buddy MacKay, and John Thrasher. In a statement, DeSantis highlighted the legacies of these individuals, stating that Florida is ‘better for their contributions’ and that they ‘have each earned the honor of being awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom.’

Jimmy Buffett, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 76, was a cultural icon known for his music and the ‘Margaritaville’ brand, which includes restaurants, resorts, and merchandise. Buffett’s contributions to Florida’s coastal culture and tourism have left a lasting impact. The Governor’s Medal is one of the highest honors the state bestows, recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to Florida’s development in various fields.

Diaz-Balart, who died earlier this year at the age of 70, was a Cuban-American statesman who was exiled from his home country following the Cuban Revolution. He was a strong advocate against communism and worked tirelessly for the cause of a free Cuba during his political career. Graham, who passed away last year at the age of 87, served in both chambers of the Florida legislature before becoming governor and a U.S. senator. His work on education, environmental conservation, and national security earned him widespread respect.

MacKay, the state’s last Democratic governor, died last year at 91 after a long career in public service. His roles included serving in the state legislature, the U.S. House, and as Florida’s lieutenant governor. Thrasher, who died earlier this year at the age of 81, was a prominent figure in Florida politics, holding positions such as Florida State University’s president, chair of the Florida Republican Party, and state legislator. His military service during the Vietnam War also contributed to his legacy.

DeSantis’ decision to honor these individuals reflects not only their personal legacies but also his efforts to acknowledge the diverse contributions of Floridians to the state’s history and identity. The Governor’s Medal of Freedom serves as a tribute to those who have shaped Florida’s cultural, political, and social landscape, regardless of their political affiliations. This recognition underscores the state’s commitment to honoring its rich history and the individuals who have played a pivotal role in shaping it.
