The Trump administration has deployed 20 military attorneys, part of the U.S. Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch, to handle misdemeanor prosecutions in Washington, D.C., as part of an intensified effort to combat crime. This follows Trump’s August 11 decision to federalize local police, which included the deployment of 800 National Guard troops. Federal law enforcement has since arrested 630 individuals, with 24 of those arrested being illegal immigrants. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the nation’s capital confirmed the military lawyers will handle these cases, emphasizing the president’s commitment to crime reduction. FBI Director Kash Patel also highlighted the success of these efforts, noting recent arrests included illegal gun recoveries, drug seizures, and charges related to assault and theft. The Metropolitan Police Department reported no homicides in D.C. since August 13, indicating a potential slowing of violent crime. Attorney General Pam Bondi reiterated the administration’s determination to ensure the city’s safety, stating the mission to ‘make DC safe again’ is not slowing down.
