Former NYC Councilmember Criticizes Mamdani’s Mayoral Bid as Race Intensifies

Joe Borelli, a former Republican leader of the New York City Council, has publicly criticized Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral prospects, asserting that the socialist’s bold campaign promises are not feasible. In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Borelli explained that Mamdani’s agenda, which includes free childcare, city-operated grocery stores, and rent freezes, faces significant financial hurdles. He emphasized that the MTA’s recent financial struggles would make implementing such a plan difficult, calling into question Mamdani’s ability to deliver on his promises.

Borelli also highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the mayoral race, cautioning that it is still very much in flux, with polls expected to reshape the landscape after Labor Day. The former councilman acknowledged that while Trump’s endorsement might help Mamdani, the former president’s appeal among New Yorkers remains limited. Meanwhile, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who recently lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani, is still pursuing support from Republican voters, though his campaign has denied rumors of Trump’s involvement in the race.

As for Mamdani’s plan to open a city-run grocery store in each of the five boroughs of NYC, sitting Governor Kathy Hochul pushed back at the idea at an event in the Hamptons over the weekend. Hochul, who is not running for mayor, told the crowd that she favors free enterprise, suggesting she finds Mamdani’s vision for city-run grocery stores at odds with her principles.

With the race for mayor still open, the stage is set for an eventful November election. While Fox News Digital reached out to Zohran Mamdani’s campaign but did not receive a response, the remaining candidates continue to vie for support as the election nears.
