Israel Conducts Airstrikes on Yemen’s Presidential Compound

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a series of airstrikes against multiple Houthi-linked targets in Yemen, including the presidential palace compound in the capital, Sanaa. This operation was conducted in response to a missile attack by the Iranian-backed Houthi group on Israeli territory, which the IDF attributed to ongoing tensions in the region. The Israeli military claimed to have targeted several sites in the capital, including the presidential palace, the Adar and Hizaz power plants, and a fuel storage facility. According to Houthi health authorities, the strikes resulted in at least six deaths and 86 injuries in the region.

The IDF issued a statement on X, confirming their actions and emphasizing that the strikes were a direct response to Houthi missile attacks. The conflict has escalated as the Houthi group, backed by Iran, has launched ballistic missiles and drones at Israel, as well as attacked ships in the Red Sea, which they claim to be acting in support of the Palestinians. The latest missile attack occurred on Friday, when the Houthis said they fired a new type of projectile at Ben Gurion Airport. The IDF noted that this missile broke apart mid-air after several interception attempts, indicating the use of a cluster munition designed to disperse multiple explosives on impact, making interception more difficult.

An unnamed Israeli Air Force official told the Associated Press that over ten fighter jets participated in the Sunday raids, showing the scale and intensity of the strikes. The statement included a quote from the Houthi group, which vowed to continue their operations in support of Gaza until Israel ends its military campaign and lifts the blockade of the Palestinian enclave. The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has consistently denounced the Houthi attacks and pledged to respond with military force to protect Israeli interests.

In addition to the Houthi attacks, there are also reports of increased tensions and military activities in the region, with the potential for further strikes and escalations. The situation remains volatile, with multiple international actors, including Iran and the United Nations, closely monitoring the developments. The IDF’s actions have drawn attention from both allies and critics, as the conflict in Yemen continues to have significant implications for regional stability.
