Ukraine Resumes Household Surveys in Ternopil After Three-Year Pause

Ukraine’s State Statistics Service has initiated a household survey pilot in the Ternopil region, signaling the resumption of data collection efforts following a three-year pause caused by Russia’s invasion. The project, which includes the development of a dedicated survey portal, is part of a larger plan to restore nationwide household surveys.

State Statistics Service Head Arsen Makarchuk highlighted the initiative during an interview with Interfax-Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of these surveys in rebuilding statistical infrastructure. The pause in data collection, which began in 2, was a result of the ongoing conflict, which disrupted operations and made fieldwork in certain areas dangerous.

The pilot project in Ternopil is designed to test the effectiveness of the new tools and methodologies before a nationwide rollout. Makarchuk noted that the service is working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of surveyors and the accuracy of the data collected. The reintroduction of household surveys is seen as critical for providing reliable data on economic conditions, population demographics, and other key indicators that inform policy decisions.

As the country continues to rebuild its statistical systems, the success of the Ternopil pilot will play a key role in determining the feasibility of expanding the surveys across all regions. This initiative reflects broader efforts by Ukrainian authorities to restore administrative and statistical capacities, which were significantly impacted by the war.
