The game, which took place on Friday night, featured a dramatic finish as Tarleton State’s kicker, Brad Larson, delivered the decisive 37-yard field goal in the second possession of overtime, giving his team the thrilling victory.
This win marks a significant milestone for Tarleton State, which has struggled against F. The Black Knights had previously won the American Athletic Conference and the Independence Bowl, showcasing their competitive nature. Despite these accomplishments, the army suffered an injury to quarterback Dewayne Coleman in the final moments of regulation, which ultimately affected the outcome of the game.
Coleman, who led Army with 100 rushing yards and a touchdown, left the game with 57 seconds remaining after a scramble. Backup quarterback Cale Hellums took over and got Army into field goal position, but Dawson Jones missed the game-winning field goal attempt. The game continued into overtime, where both teams made their first field-goal attempts, with Tarleton State ultimately prevailing in the second overtime period.
Tarleton State’s quarterback, Victor Gabalis, was 16-of-30 passing for 152 yards and a touchdown, while running backs Caleb Lewis and Tre Page III each found the end zone.
