Sumrall claimed that the Wildcats showed disrespect to New Orleans by choosing white uniforms, which was a request denied by the home team. The Green Wave’s dominance in the 23-3 victory was fueled by this decision, as Sumrall stated that the team used it as a source of motivation.
The game took place at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, where Tulane had previously played its home games during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Green Wave opted to wear green helmets, similar to those the 2005 team wore, and that squad also wore white jerseys. However, Northwestern, on the road, decided to go with the white tops in the season opener.
