Law enforcement authorities have arrested a Maryland man for placing incendiary devices near a fire station in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Slater Chaia, 34, of District Heights, Maryland, has been charged with possession of a destructive device and possession of incendiary material with intent to create a destructive device, both of which are felony offenses. The charges stem from incidents of littering at the Capitol Heights Fire Station 805 with what a criminal complaint called ‘makeshift Molotov cocktails.’
Surveillance footage shows him walking up to the fire station’s property with two plastic bottles, placing them on the ground next to a flagpole, then moving one to the pavement a few feet away from the mailbox and placing the second bottle nearby. The devices contained an incendiary liquid and a wick. Police posted photos of Chaia’s distinctive Tom and Jerry-themed Members Only jacket in the footage.
This case is part of a broader investigation into potential threats in the Washington, D.C. area. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also looking into the matter. Police believe that the fire station was specifically targeted, though the motive remains unclear. Prince George’s County Bureau of Homeland Security Deputy Chief James McCreary, who expressed concern over the increasing danger these devices pose if activated, stated that while the initial devices were inert, they have become more dangerous.
Chaia was caught on camera on August 13 at around 8 a.m., but there were two more instances of him placing devices near the station, one on June 1, and another on July 15. Neither of these incidents were captured on video, making it more difficult to track his actions and the full extent of the threat. Chaia remains in custody without bond, with the legal proceedings continuing.
This case has drawn attention to the importance of law enforcement vigilance and the need to prevent potential acts of violence. The incident is also part of ongoing efforts in the District of Columbia to combat criminal activity, including the recent bust of an alleged Tren de Aragua gang member.
