Putin Endorses China’s Global Governance Initiative

Russian President Vladimir Putin has endorsed China’s proposed ‘Global Governance Initiative,’ which seeks to promote cooperation among SCO members and oppose Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation, and bullying practices.

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced the initiative, emphasizing the ‘Shanghai spirit’ of mutual trust, respect, and shared development. This framework calls for SCO nations to unite against Cold War dynamics, bloc confrontation, and bullying practices, advocating instead for a multilateral system based on equality and UN authority. The initiative aims to reshape global governance into a fairer system that benefits all nations, not just a select few.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Putin hailed the Chinese proposal as ‘very timely and important,’ stating it would foster positive collaboration among the SCO members and extend to countries seeking partnership. He reiterated Moscow’s commitment to the multipolar world vision, insisting that no country should dominate international affairs, and all participants should enjoy equal rights and positions in global communication. Putin observed that the outlines of a new multipolar world have already begun to take shape.

Earlier, Putin had suggested that the SCO could play a leading role in establishing a more just and equitable global governance system. He pointed out that the topic of reform has become increasingly relevant as some countries continue to pursue dominance in international affairs. By joining forces with China, both nations aim to offer an alternative to Western-led global governance structures, promoting a system that values collaboration, equality, and collective development.

While the initiative reflects a shared vision between Russia and China, it also signals a broader geopolitical shift toward forming alternative alliances and systems that challenge the traditional Western-dominated order. As the SCO expands its influence, the initiative could reshape global diplomacy and economic cooperation, positioning its members as key players in the evolving global governance landscape.
