Troy Aikman Questions Jerry Jones’ Priorities After Micah Parsons Trade

Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman has voiced concerns about the team’s direction following the controversial trade of star linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. This decision, made just weeks before the 2025 season, has sparked debate about the priorities of team owner Jerry Jones. Aikman, who spoke on the Rich Eisen Show, suggested that Jones’ approach to managing the franchise has shifted from focusing on on-field success to generating attention and drama.

“I saw Jerry talk about the fact that having the Cowboys as a discussion point is meaningful to him. And if people aren’t talking about the Cowboys, then he’ll do things to stir it up,” Aikman said. “So, he kind of walked into that and has given the impression that supersedes winning.” Aikman highlighted the Cowboys’ recent playoff struggles, noting that while they have had a strong regular-season record, they have only managed four playoff victories since their last Super Bowl win in 2016.

Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, recently stated in his Netflix docuseries, “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys,” that he continued to serve as the general manager because he enjoyed the “pain” of managing the franchise. However, the trade of Parsons has left many fans frustrated, especially as they have longed for the team to return to the NFC Championship Game. Despite the controversial trade, the Cowboys have made moves to bolster their roster, acquiring wide receiver George Pickens and selecting offensive lineman Tyler Booker in the draft.

The Cowboys’ recent playoff struggles have been well-documented. Since their last Super Bowl win in 2016, the team has made the playoffs 13 times, including three of the last four years. However, they have consistently failed to advance beyond the divisional round. Last season, injuries, including to Parsons, severely impacted the team’s playoff chances. With the Cowboys set to face the Philadelphia Eagles in their season opener, the pressure is on for the franchise to finally break through its recent playoff drought and make a deep postseason run.

Aikman’s comments come amid ongoing speculation about the team’s strategy and whether Jones’ focus on publicity has taken precedence over building a competitive roster. While Jones has emphasized his desire to win, Aikman questions whether the team’s recent moves reflect a genuine commitment to success. With the Cowboys returning to the postseason, the challenge will be to address their weaknesses and secure a strong performance in the 2025 season.
