Cause of Death Revealed for DePaul Soccer Player, Son of Former NFL Receiver Milton Stegall

The cause of death of Chase Stegall, a member of the DePaul University men’s soccer team and the son of former NFL player Milton Stegall, has been officially revealed as ‘sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP),’ a natural cause. The university had initially announced Steg, a sophomore at DePaul, was found dead in his residence hall on campus in early June, but the cause of death was not disclosed at the time.

Months later, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the death was due to SUDEP, a rare but known condition that can occur in individuals with epilepsy. His death was described as natural, and the news has since brought renewed attention to the condition and its impact on athletes and individuals alike.

Stegall, a dedicated player who had appeared in 16 games for the DePaul soccer team last year and scored one goal against Drake, was remembered as a cherished member of the university community. Vice President and Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy and head coach Mark Plotkin shared a joint statement mourning his passing, expressing condolences to the family and highlighting the lasting impact Chase will have on the DePaul University athletics and broader campus family.
