Nexstar to Continue Preempting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Despite Disney’s Decision to Resume Airings

Nexstar Media Group, the largest U.S. local television broadcasting company, has decided to continue preempting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on its ABC-affiliated stations, despite Disney’s announcement that the show will return to ABC after its suspension. The decision follows Kimmel’s controversial remarks about the alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk, which led to FCC intervention and the show’s initial suspension.

Disney has allowed the show to resume airings, but Nexstar, which owns 32 ABC affiliate stations, remains committed to preempting the program. The company’s statement emphasized its decision to uphold respectful discourse and local programming, noting that the show will remain available on Disney-owned streaming platforms while Nexstar stations continue to focus on local news and relevant content.

Similarly, Sinclair Broadcast Group, which operates 30 ABC stations, has also announced it will continue to preempt ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ with ongoing discussions with ABC about its potential return. Disney plans to have Kimmel address the controversy on his return, which is expected to air on Tuesday night.

The situation has sparked polarized reactions. Liberals have defended Kimmel’s free speech, arguing that he should not be punished for exercising his right to comment on public figures. Conservatives, however, have criticized Kimmel’s remarks, which suggested that the suspected killer of Charlie Kirk was a MAGA member, as being offensive and untrue. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has called Kimmel’s comments ‘some of the sickest conduct,’ indicating potential FCC actions.

Nexstar’s decision to preempt the show comes amid its ongoing acquisition of Tegna for $6.2 billion, which it claims will ensure the sustainability of local news and programming. The acquisition requires FCC approval, and Nexstar’s station footprint overlaps with Tegna in 35 of Tegna’s 51 market areas, enhancing its network in key political markets like Phoenix, Atlanta, Toledo, Ohio, and Portland, Maine.

As the situation continues to develop, the dispute reflects broader tensions between free speech, media responsibility, and the influence of corporate ownership on broadcast content. Nexstar’s stance highlights the growing role of local broadcasters in shaping content and the potential impact on national discourse.
