Ukrainian lawmakers have introduced a proposal for a specialized timber exchange trading system aimed at small wood processors. The plan, part of the revised draft Law on the Timber Market (No. 1322,7-d), was registered in September by Dmytro Natalukha and his committee colleagues. The initiative is set to streamline operations and enhance market access for small-scale forestry enterprises.
The proposed system is designed to address existing market inefficiencies by creating a centralized platform for trading timber products. This would help reduce transaction costs and increase transparency in the sector, which has long been plagued by fragmented supply chains and limited access to broader market channels.
According to Natalukha, the measure is intended to foster greater competitiveness among small wood processors, who currently face challenges in competing with larger, more industrialized entities. By establishing a dedicated exchange, the proposal aims to level the playing field and provide these businesses with fairer market conditions and better pricing opportunities.
Industry experts have expressed cautious optimism about the measure, noting that it could significantly impact the forestry sector’s growth potential. However, some concerns remain regarding the practical implementation of such a system, including the need for adequate regulatory oversight and infrastructure development to support its operations.
