Country star Raul Malo, 60, has made the difficult decision to cancel his 2025 tour dates after receiving a new and serious diagnosis of leptomeningeal disease (LMD), a rare complication of his already advanced stage IV colon cancer. Malo, a founding member of the Mavericks, announced his health update through an Instagram post, sharing that the condition has forced the cancellation of all remaining shows in the upcoming year.
Malo previously revealed his cancer diagnosis in June 2024, and the new development has further complicated his treatment efforts. Leptomeningeal disease, as explained by the Cleveland Clinic, is an incurable condition in which cancer cells spread to the cerebrospinal fluid and the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The Mavericks, who have been on tour with Dwight Yoakam on the Cosmic Roundup & Rodeo Tour, have had several dates canceled or postponed due to Malo’s health challenges.
Despite the difficulties, Malo remains determined to fight his illness. He shared that he is beginning radiation treatment for LMD and is exploring further chemotherapy and alternative therapies. While he is taking a step back from touring, Malo promised fans that The Mavericks will continue their creative projects, releasing live recordings, merchandise, and other content. He also emphasized that the two December shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium will be ‘planning something special,’ though details remain under wraps.
Malo expressed gratitude for the support from fans, family, and the music industry, stating that the love and encouragement he has received have been instrumental in his journey. He encouraged his followers to find kindness and empathy in their own lives, noting that these human connections are what truly make a difference in tough times. The Mavericks’ upcoming shows in December represent a bridge between his personal struggles and his commitment to his art and fans, maintaining a sense of continuity despite the challenges ahead.
