Louisiana State Police have released a critical incident briefing video that highlights witness accounts and surveillance footage of Kyren Lacy’s alleged reckless driving in a December crash that claimed the life of 78-year-old Herman Hall. The video, which was provided by Lacy’s attorney Matthew Ory, includes bodycam footage and witness statements that detail the sequence of events leading to the crash. Lacy’s attorney argued that his client was not at fault for the incident.
The footage shows Lacy driving at a high rate of speed through a no-passing zone at a 40 mph posted speed limit. Lacy’s attorney, Matthew Ory, said there was “no disputing” that Lacy illegally passed four vehicles, which was also caught on surveillance. The video appears to capture Lacy passing three passenger vehicles and one loaded 18-wheeler in a designated no-passing zone at a high speed, according to police. Lacy’s attorney emphasized that there was no disputing the illegal passing but maintained that his client was not at fault for the crash.
Witnesses described the chaotic sequence of events leading up to the fatal crash. A driver of a red 18-wheeler told officers that the gold truck going north had to brake suddenly to avoid a head-on collision with Lacy’s Charger, causing a female driver in a Kia Cadenza to swerve into the southbound lane and crash into a Kia Sorrento carrying Hall. The driver of the red 18-wheeler said, “Did you see a green Charger flying that way? A green Charger caused all this.”
Police stated that numerous witnesses told responding officers Lacy’s driving caused the crash. Another witness said “she had no choice but to move out of the way,” according to police. The female driver told police while being treated for her injuries, “The other car was trying to pass the other car. I was trying to dodge by not hitting him, by coming around.”
One written report noted that “I would say [Lacy was traveling at] no less than 80 mph.” The police report explained that the gold truck traveling north veered right to avoid a head-on collision with the green charger. As the gold truck veered right, the driver of the Kia Cadenza saw the approaching green charger and swerved left into the southbound lane, impacting a northbound Kia Sorrento. The police said the driver of the gold truck “reacted appropriately” to avoid a crash with Lacy.
Police concluded that “all evidence collected supports the conclusion that Lacy’s reckless operation of the green Charger into oncoming traffic triggered the chain of events involving the other drivers, ultimately resulting in the fatal crash.” Lacy’s attorney, Matthew Ory, argued that Lacy could not have caused the crash, given that he was nearly a football field’s distance away from the wreck by the time he got back into the correct lane. Ory stated, “At the time of impact, he’s 72.6 yards behind the vehicles at the time of impact. Key word: behind the vehicles. That is not how this story was ever painted. Never.”
Rocky Arceneaux, Lacy’s agent, said in January that his client was cooperating with authorities in the investigation. Lacy transferred to LSU in 2022 and had his best season in 2024, recording 58 catches for 866 yards and nine touchdowns.
