Sophie Cunningham Seeks Break from WNBA Drama, Avoids Watching Finals

Sophie Cunningham, a prominent guard for the Indiana Fever, has chosen to step back from the WNBA Finals, citing the ‘toxicity’ and ‘drama-filled’ nature of the season as a reason for her decision. During her podcast, ‘Show Me Something,’ she revealed that she has completely avoided watching any of the games, seeking a break from the league’s ongoing issues. ‘I need a cleanse. I’m booking vacations,’ she stated, indicating her desire to focus on personal time and recovery.

Cunningham’s comments reflect her frustration with the WNBA’s leadership and the challenges with officiating that have come under scrutiny this season. She has been among the players to publicly criticize Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, arguing that the commissioner has been more focused on her own interests rather than addressing the players’ concerns. ‘I think it’s pretty shameful that she always makes it about her, Cathy, when it should have nothing to do with her,’ Cunningham remarked, highlighting the tension between the league’s leadership and its athletes.

While her comments indicate a level of dissatisfaction with the league’s management and the ongoing issues, Cunningham still expressed appreciation for her time with the Fever. She highlighted the close-knit team environment and the positive relationships formed among her teammates, despite the challenges faced during the season. ‘Our locker room was so close-knit and so fun and just so full of love that, like, I’ve never been a part of a locker room like that, ever, and it was awesome,’ she noted, emphasizing the personal and team achievements despite the setbacks.
