Two Pennsylvania State Police officers were shot and remain in critical and serious condition while responding to a retail theft in Franklin County. Authorities confirmed that the shooting occurred when troopers were called to a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Guilford Township. The incident unfolded around 6:10 p.m., after the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting a police pursuit.
During the pursuit, police deployed spike strips and stopped the fleeing vehicle near Exit 3, where it came to rest off the roadway. Two female suspects exited the vehicle and were taken into custody after complying with troopers’ commands. However, a male suspect then began firing at the troopers, striking two of them. Troopers returned fire, fatally wounding the male suspect. Both troopers were then flown to Wellspan York Hospital for treatment.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his concern for the injured officers and called for prayers for those involved. “Lori and I are praying for the two state troopers shot in the line of duty in Chambersburg tonight,” Shapiro posted on X. He emphasized the dedication and bravery of Pennsylvania’s law enforcement, urging others to join in prayer for the injured troopers, their families, and all members of the Pennsylvania State Police.
The incident comes amid a series of shootings targeting state police in Pennsylvania. Last month, three officers were killed in an ambush while responding to a domestic call in York County. The suspected gunman was killed by police, officials reported. This follows another shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County, where an officer was killed in the line of duty. The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association (PSTA) has also extended its gratitude to the injured troopers for their service, highlighting their bravery and commitment to public safety.
