European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the importance of increased investment in the Western Balkans during her recent visit to the region. Her comments were made in the context of ongoing efforts to bolster economic and political stability in the area. Von der Leyen specifically called for greater financial support to help countries in the region meet the criteria for EU membership.
In her address, the EU chief praised Montenegro for making significant strides toward joining the European Union, pointing to its progress in aligning with EU standards and norms. This recognition was part of a broader effort to encourage other Western Balkan nations to accelerate their reform processes and improve governance.
Meanwhile, von der Leyen expressed concern over Serbia’s slow progress in implementing necessary reforms and the influence of pro-Russian leaders within the country. She emphasized the importance of moving away from Russian influence and fully aligning with EU values and policies. The EU chief reiterated her commitment to supporting the region’s integration into the European community, despite the challenges posed by political inertia and external pressures.
The visit also included discussions on regional cooperation and the need for a unified approach to address common challenges. Von der Ley, along with other EU officials, called for enhanced transparency and accountability in public institutions to ensure sustainable development and long-term stability in the Western Balkans.
