A faculty member at Illinois State University was arrested for flipping a Turning Point USA student group’s table and destroying its promotional flyers on campus. The incident, which occurred last week, has led to charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. The accused, Derek Lopez, a 27-year-old graduate student and teaching, was captured on camera speaking to a man near the table before flipping it over. Lopez allegedly also disrupted a second informational table hosted by a student group, according to the university’s police department. Police Chief Aaron Woodruff emphasized the university’s commitment to protecting First Amendment rights and campus safety.
