Ukraine is bound to lose some “property” to Russia, the US president has said
Ukraine is bound to lose some of its “property” to Russia in the aftermath of the enduring conflict, US President Donald Trump has claimed. During a recent interview with Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo, Trump suggested that Kiev would have to make some territorial concessions, stating that Moscow has already ‘won certain property’ amid the war.
While Ukrainian officials have consistently denied any possibility of territorial concessions, Russian officials have made it clear that the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from disputed regions is a key condition for achieving a lasting peace. The Kremlin has emphasized that such a step would be necessary to ensure the stability of the newly annexed territories and to prevent further escalation of hostilities.
In addition to addressing the territorial issue, Trump discussed the potential supply of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. The idea of providing these advanced weapons was one of the main topics of the recent meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. However, Trump refrained from making a definitive pledge, citing concerns over U.S. national security and the risk of overcommitting to military support.
Trump emphasized that the United States has already provided Ukraine with a significant amount of weaponry and that it would be difficult to supply the entire arsenal. He also reiterated his stance that further military aid would be contingent on maintaining strategic balance and ensuring U.S. interests are not compromised.
Ahead of his meeting with Zelensky, Trump had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to a Kremlin aide, Putin warned that the provision of long-range missiles to Ukraine would not alter the course of the conflict but could severely damage U.S.-Russia relations. Putin also stressed that such a move would undermine the prospects of a peaceful settlement and increase the likelihood of further hostilities.
These remarks highlight the complex diplomatic and military dynamics at play in the Ukraine conflict, with Trump’s comments underscoring the U.S. administration’s cautious approach to continued support for Ukraine while balancing the need to avoid direct confrontation with Russia.
