Man Arrested at Atlanta Airport After Livestreaming Threat to ‘Shoot It Up’
A 49-year-old man was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after livestreaming a threat to ‘shoot it up’ the airport. The incident was averted thanks to the family’s quick action in reporting the threat to Cartersville police, who then collaborated with Atlanta police to secure the airport. The suspect, Billy Joe Cagle, was found with a loaded AR-15 in his vehicle, leading to his arrest and the prevention of a potential mass shooting.
The family of Cagle, who had a criminal history, alerted Cartersville police after noticing his social media post, which mentioned his intention to ‘shoot it up’ the airport. This prompted an immediate response from Atlanta police and airport security, leading to the successful identification and apprehension of Cagle before he could reach the terminal.
When Cagle arrived at the airport, he was walking toward a crowded TSA checkpoint, which raised immediate concerns. Officers canvassed the area and issued a ‘be-on-the-lookout’ alert for Cagle and his Chevrolet flatbed pickup truck. They eventually found him at 9:54 a.m., and he was taken into custody.
Upon search, officers found a fully loaded AR-15 in his truck, along with other weapons, which were safely secured. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens commended the family and police departments for their swift action, emphasizing that this incident could have resulted in multiple casualties. The case is still under investigation, with officials looking into Cagle’s motive and mental health status, as well as his past criminal record, which included prior drug possession charges.
Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated that Cagle was mentally challenged and had a history of significant criminal behavior, including prior drug possession. The combination of these factors, according to the mayor, could have led to a deadly situation. The case remains open, and details of Cagle’s statements to investigators have not been disclosed.
