Aroldis Chapman Vows to Retire Immediately if Traded Back to Yankees

MLB star Aroldis Chapman has made it clear that if he ever finds himself traded back to the New York Yankees, he would retire immediately, calling the notion ‘not even dead.’

During a recent appearance on the ‘Swing Completo’ podcast, Chapman told the audience, ‘If I were told that I was being traded to New York, I’d pack my things and go home. I’ll retire right on the spot if that happens. I’m not crazy. Never again.’ These remarks underscore a deep-seated frustration, particularly after the team’s failed attempt to secure a World Series title against the Houston Astros in the 2019 American League Championship Series. That incident, which remains a bitter memory for Yankees fans, likely contributed to his strong stance against returning to the franchise.

Despite his positive relationships with players and manager Aaron Boone, Chapman attributed his decision to leave the Yankees to the team’s management. ‘I got along well with all the players, never had a problem with anybody, even the manager,’ he said. ‘We’re friends and we talk and everything. The bosses are the ones who make those decisions.’

Chapman’s tenure with the Yankees from 2017 to 2022 was a critical phase of their resurgence, but the aftermath of the 2019 ALCS loss left a lasting impact. Now, as a free agent, he has opted to join the Boston Red Sox for the 2025 season, where he has made a strong impression with a 1.17 ERA and 85 strikeouts. As he turns 38 before the 2026 season, his future remains a topic of discussion among fans and analysts.
