College Advisor Accused of Strangling Girlfriend, Setting Apartment on Fire with Newborn Inside

A college financial aid advisor in New York is accused of killing his girlfriend by strangling her and then setting their shared apartment on fire, leaving authorities to find her 3-year-old son dead. Kidane Haile, 30, allegedly strangled his girlfriend, Kathleen ‘Katie’ Carrig, 29, to death on October 18 at their apartment in Buffalo, New York, according to a statement from Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane. After allegedly killing Carrig, Haile set the apartment on fire, according to BTPM. Noah Carrig, the couple’s 4-day-old son, was also found dead at the apartment. His death is still under investigation, Keane said. Haile was charged with second-degree murder on Thursday. The University at Buffalo, where Haile worked as a financial aid advisor, stated it does not comment on personnel matters but expressed its condolences to those affected by the tragedy. A judge ordered Haile to be held without bail during an arraignment hearing. Keane emphasized the commitment to a thorough examination of the evidence and the anticipation of filing additional charges against the accused.
