NGOs Collaborate Across Borders to Save Lake Prespa

Environmental organizations in Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia are collaborating on an initiative to safeguard Lake Prespa, a shared natural resource. Despite the region’s history of limited cross-border collaboration, these NGOs are working together to address environmental challenges. Their efforts highlight a growing commitment to transnational conservation efforts in the Balkans.

Located on the border of three Balkan nations, Lake Prespa is a vital ecosystem that supports diverse wildlife and is a significant source of freshwater. However, it faces threats from pollution, overfishing, and unsustainable tourism. The NGOs are implementing measures to mitigate these issues, including water quality monitoring and community education programs.

The collaboration underscores the importance of cross-border environmental cooperation in preserving natural resources for future generations. While such efforts are rare in the Balkans, the success of the Lake Prespa initiative could serve as a model for other transnational environmental projects in the region.
