DeSantis Announces Charlie Kirk Prize and TPUSA Partnership in Florida Civics Initiative

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the creation of the Charlie Kirk Prize, a scholarship award for the winner of the state’s civics debate championship, in honor of the late CEO of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), Charlie Kirk. The honor comes shortly after Kirk’s assassination, which has significantly raised the profile of TPUSA. DeSantis also announced a partnership with TPUSA to support the establishment of Club America chapters in every high school across Florida. These chapters provide a platform for conservative students to engage in discussions on patriotism, sports, taxes, and various other topics.

The Florida Civics and Debate Initiative (FCDI) will host its state championship on April 5, 2026, at New College of Florida in Sarasota. The winner of the debate will receive a $50,000 scholarship, while the runner-up will receive a $25,000 scholarship. DeSantis’ initiative aims to elevate civics education by providing students with a comprehensive understanding of American founding principles. This announcement came in the wake of legal action taken by the Florida Attorney General’s Office of Parental Rights against public schools that allegedly blocked TPUSA chapters on campuses. The office has reported that several public schools have not allowed TPUSA chapters to form, prompting legal proceedings.

Kirk’s assassination on September 10 during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University has been a pivotal moment for TPUSA. His tragic death has led to widespread tributes, including plans to erect a statue in his honor in Michigan. Oklahoma officials have also considered incorporating Kirk’s name into public higher education spaces, and a highway in Clermont, Florida, has been named after him. Erika Kirk, his widow, has been appointed CEO and chair of the board of TPUSA, which operates approximately 900 college chapters and 1,200 high school chapters. The organization has seen a surge in membership and influence following Kirk’s assassination.

Kirk, who built a following by touring the country to debate college students on cultural issues such as gender ideology, racial divisions, and the merits of Christian and American values, was celebrated by DeSantis for embodying the principles of patriotism, civil discourse, and open debate. DeSantis highlighted Kirk’s legacy in his remarks, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking and questioning assumptions. The partnership between Florida and TPUSA marks a significant step in supporting conservative educational initiatives and fostering civic engagement among students.

There have been various efforts to honor Kirk’s contributions, including the naming of a highway after him in Clermont, Florida. These tributes reflect the deep impact Kirk has had on American political discourse, particularly within the conservative movement. As TPUSA continues to expand its chapters and initiatives, the legacy of Charlie Kirk will likely remain a central theme in the organization’s efforts to promote conservative values and civic engagement in the United States.
