Eastern Europeans Falling Ill from Italy Caregiving

A growing number of Eastern European workers have migrated to Italy to provide care for the country’s aging population. However, many of these caregivers are now falling ill with a condition called ‘Italy syndrome,’ attributed to the intense demands of the job. Veronica Durughian, a Moldovan mother who left her home country in search of better wages to support her son, returned to Moldova with serious health issues after caring for three elderly Italians. The syndrome, which has become a subject of concern for healthcare professionals, is thought to be a result of the emotional stress, physical strain, and lack of proper support systems experienced by these caregivers. As the demand for caregiving services continues to rise in Italy, the plight of these workers has sparked debates about worker protection and the sustainability of such labor arrangements.
