Fairfax County officials are under intense scrutiny following the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) claim that the county’s sanctuary policies allowed an illegal alien to evade capture for years despite multiple arrests and charges. The individual, Jorge Armando Melendez-Gonzalez, a Salvadoran national, was finally arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on October 24, 2025, after the county refused to honor previous immigration detainers.
Melendez-Gonzalez, 27, had been arrested ten times between March 19, 2018, and July 18, 2025, and faced 19 criminal charges, including malicious shooting, unlawful wounding, and assault on a family member. Despite an immigration judge ordering his removal from the U.S. in October 2016, he returned to Virginia, where he continued to accumulate a long list of offenses.
ICE reportedly lodged detainers against Melendez-Gonzalez in both 2023 and July 2025, but Fairfax County officials declined to honor these requests, leading to his release back into the community. The county’s decision has drawn criticism from the DHS, which accused the county of protecting the illegal alien and allowing him to terrorize Virginia residents.
Fairfax County officials, including County Chairman Jeffrey McKay (a Democrat), have denied being a sanctuary jurisdiction, emphasizing that they follow federal and state laws. However, the DHS has placed the blame squarely on the county’s sanctuary policies, calling them a threat to public safety.
