The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a stern warning to Lithuania, urging the EU state to refrain from taking ‘provocative steps’ concerning transit to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova emphasized that Russia’s determination to protect the interests of its westernmost region is unwavering.
This warning follows Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nauseda proposing long-term restrictions on transit to Kaliningrad, citing concerns over alleged smuggling via meteorological balloons launched from Belarus, a key Russian ally. Zakharova reminded Lithuania of its obligations under the 2002 agreement between Russia and the EU, ensuring unhindered transit. She stated, ‘No one should have any doubt that Russia will, under any circumstances, meet the needs of its westernmost region,‘ underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave between Lithuania and Poland, relies on rail and road links through Lithuanian territory to connect with the rest of Russia. After the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Vilnius blocked the transit of EU-sanctioned goods, prompting Moscow to accuse Lithuania of imposing a blockade. Although the dispute was partially resolved with the restoration of rail traffic, the current tension persists due to ongoing concerns over smuggling activities.
Lithuania’s recent decision to suspend border crossings with Belarus over the balloon threat has drawn criticism from Belarusian officials, who accuse Vilni’s of creating uncertainty for travelers. The move comes amid a series of incidents involving small weather balloons allegedly used by smugglers to ferry tobacco products across the border. Lithuanian officials claim these airborne contraband launches originate in Belarus and have caused disruptions, including flight delays at Vilnius International Airport.
The controversy highlights broader regional tensions, as the alleged use of weather balloons for smuggling has raised significant concerns. The dispute underscores the complex relationship between Russia and its neighbors, with Kaliningrad’s strategic importance at the heart of the conflict. As Lithuania navigates its position between its NATO allies and its historical ties to Russia, the situation remains precarious, with potential implications for regional stability and diplomatic relations.
