President Donald Trump, during a diplomatic dinner hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, revealed that his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping will last three to four hours. The discussion is expected to focus on addressing trade disputes and advancing economic cooperation between the two nations. Trump’s comments were caught on a hot mic during the event, highlighting the informal and candid nature of the exchange.
Additionally, Trump expressed confidence that tensions with North Korea would be resolved through dialogue, citing his positive rapport with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Although no formal meeting with Kim has been announced for this trip, Trump reiterated his openness to engaging with him, underscoring the complex geopolitical landscape during his Asia tour.
The talks with his South Korean counterpart come as the two countries move closer to completing a new trade agreement. Henry Haggard, a former U.S. Embassy official in Seoul, noted that Trump’s main objective in meeting Lee Jae-myung is to secure a trade deal and, along with that, $350 billion in investments in the United States. He will also seek to push Lee to commit to a stronger stance against China, and to increase defense spending. Lee, leading a left-leaning government, has shown reluctance to enhance South Korea’s partnership with the U.S. due to fears of provoking Chinese backlash.
Trump’s Asia trip has already included visits to Japan, and his focus is now shifting to South Korea. His engagement with Kim Jong Un remains a central topic, with Trump expressing hope for a constructive dialogue to resolve ongoing tensions. This trip reflects the broader strategic interests of the U.S. in balancing its relationships with both China and North Korea, while securing economic benefits and enhancing regional security.
