Kyivstar Begins Testing Starlink Direct to Cell Connectivity Across Ukraine

Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile network operator, has announced the expansion of its Starlink Direct to Cell satellite connectivity testing across the entire country, excluding border areas, active combat zones, and temporarily occupied regions. This initiative is a key step in addressing the ongoing challenge of providing reliable broadband access to Ukrainian citizens amid the conflict with Russia.

The company stated that the testing phase is critical to ensuring the technology’s effectiveness and compatibility with existing networks. Kyivstar’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to maintain communication infrastructure and support digital connectivity, particularly in regions where traditional cellular networks have been disrupted.

Starlink Direct to Cell technology allows for direct satellite connectivity to mobile devices, bypassing the need for traditional ground-based infrastructure. This could be transformative for areas where terrestrial networks are unavailable or damaged, offering a resilient alternative for internet and voice communications.

The expanded testing comes as Ukraine continues to receive significant international support for its digital infrastructure initiatives. The collaboration between Kyivstar and SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, highlights the growing role of private-sector solutions in sustaining critical services during times of conflict.
