North Carolina Democrat Lawmaker Resigns Amid Allegations of Child Sexual Misconduct

North Carolina Democratic state lawmaker Cecil Brockman resigned from his position following felony charges tied to alleged sexual conduct with a minor. The decision came after bipartisan calls for his resignation and a potential committee investigation into his alleged misconduct by North Carolina’s House speaker. Brockman, who represents portions of High Point and Guilford County, stated he would focus on his defense against the charges and could not fulfill his duties to constituents. The House speaker acknowledged the resignation as the right step, avoiding a difficult expulsion process and bringing closure to the situation.

Brockman, 41, faced two counts of statutory rape of a child between the ages of 13 and 15 and two counts of indecent liberties with a child, according to court records. Magistrate’s order indicated Brockman is accused of engaging in sex acts with a 15-year-old in August and is twice alleged to have committed and attempted to commit
