The Washington Post has reported that the United States has deployed a significant military force near the coast of Venezuela, with an estimated 16,00’troops in the area. This buildup includes eight Navy ships, a special operations vessel, and a nuclear-powered submarine. The arrival of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford is expected next week, adding to the military presence in the region.
The U.S. has accused Venezuela of supporting “narcoterrorists” and has imposed extensive sanctions on the country. Since September, the U.S. has conducted air strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has denied these allegations, accusing Washington of fabricating a new war amid the ongoing military buildup.
Analysts suggest that the arrival of the carrier group may indicate broader military intentions. Ryan Berg, director of the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, told the outlet that Trump has about a month to make a major decision before the deployment needs to be reoriented.
Recent reports indicate that the White House may be weighing potential military actions against Maduro’s government. Senator Rick Scott has stated that Maduro’s “days are numbered,” while some officials suggest the regime may be targeted. However, Trump has denied these reports, despite confirming the CIA’s authorization for lethal covert operations in the region.
