Two Democratic candidates for governor, Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey, are continuing to emphasize opposition to President Trump as their main campaign theme, despite broader efforts within the party to adopt new strategies. While other Democrats have sought to address their party’s failings by pursuing innovative approaches, Spanberger and Sherrill are doubling down on a strategy that has historically resonated with their base.
Representative Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, a former congresswoman, made headlines earlier this month by pledging allegiance at a campaign event. Sherrill has drawn direct parallels between her current gubernatorial race and her initial run for Congress, citing a consistent focus on undermining Trump’s influence and policy initiatives. She argues that the core issue remains the same, regardless of the office being contested.
Spanberger, who previously ran for the U.S. House in Virginia, has also maintained a similar narrative, framing her bid for governor as a continuation of her efforts to counter Trump’s policies. The decision to retain this strategy reflects the enduring appeal of anti-Trump rhetoric among certain segments of the Democratic base, even as the party seeks to broaden its appeal beyond traditional strongholds.
