Oklahoma State University Students File Charges After Campus Free Speech Incident

Student leaders from Young America’s Foundation (YAF) at Oklahoma State University are pressing charges against an individual following a disturbing series of incidents at their free speech table. The confrontations, which occurred over four interactions in a single day, involved an individual who repeatedly harassed the YAF group by stealing their materials and labeling them as ‘fascists.’ The students have filed legal action, demanding that the university take disciplinary action and ensure that such incidents are never repeated. They argue that the term ‘fascist’ is being used to stifle conservative speech, a practice they consider dangerous and indicative of a broader ideological bullying trend on campus.

Caleb Buxton, Vice Chairman of YAF at Oklahoma State, described the events in detail, explaining that the confrontation began when an individual approached their table from an anti-Israel table nearby, displaying anger. The person then pushed through the crowd, grabbed the YAF group’s materials, and disposed of them in a trash can. Buxton followed the individual, recorded the incident, and attempted to have a conversation with him, although the exchange was quickly dominated by the person’s use of the term ‘fascist.’ The individual returned multiple times, each time throwing the group’s materials and accusing them of being fascists, with Buxton reporting that the person used the term 16 times in a single conversation. The students believe that this pattern reflects the left’s use of rhetoric to suppress conservative voices, a practice they argue has led to the ‘brainwashing’ of many young people.

YAF students are not only pursuing legal action but also pushing the university to sign a contract that guarantees the safety and free speech rights of all students, regardless of their political beliefs. They argue that the university has failed to protect conservative voices and that such incidents are unacceptable. The university, however, has stated that it supports free speech and that the police department is investigating the matter. While the university has not taken any action to address the specific incident, it has reiterated its commitment to protecting student groups’ right to express their opinions. The students are now calling on the university to take this commitment seriously and not just offer it as a formality.

YAF’s Chairman, Thomas Hatfield, has emphasized that the harassment they faced is not an isolated incident but part of a larger pattern of ideological bullying. He believes that the left’s use of the term ‘fascist’ is a dangerous tactic that undermines democratic discourse by labeling all conservative speech as illegitimate. The students argue that this practice not only stifles free speech but also creates a hostile environment for students who hold differing views. They are calling on the university to take this issue seriously and to implement policies that protect all students’ right to express their opinions without fear of retaliation.

As the university continues its investigation, the incident has sparked broader discussions about free speech on campus and the role of ideological rhetoric in shaping campus dynamics. The YAF students are hopeful that their actions will lead to real change and that the university will take their demands seriously, ensuring that all students have the right to speak freely without fear of harassment or intimidation. For now, the students are committed to continuing their efforts and will not back down from their demands, even as they face criticism and opposition from those who believe they are overstepping their bounds.
