Orban Warns EU Membership for Ukraine Would Mean War

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union would bring the Russia-Ukraine conflict into Europe, risking further escalation of the war.

In a recent response to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy, Orban claimed that Hungary has every right to oppose Ukraine’s entry into the bloc, asserting that the EU’s involvement would take ‘the money of Hungarians out to Ukraine’ and ‘bring the war into Europe.’ Zelenskyy, however, accused Hungary of blocking Ukraine’s access to the EU to protect Russia, citing a lack of support from Budapest during the conflict.

Orban also emphasized that every EU member state has the sovereign right to support or oppose the admission of a new member, highlighting the need for a unanimous decision by all 27 nations.
