The divide within the Democratic Party has become more pronounced as several members, including Fetterman and seven others, voted to end the government shutdown and fund the government through January. Newsom, among other Democrats, criticized Fetterman’s actions, arguing that the decision to reopen the government was a betrayal of working Americans. In a post on X, Newsom condemned the Senate vote as a moment for strength, but instead, he saw a display of capitulation. He called on the American people to demand more from their leaders.
Fetterman, however, dismisses the political backlash with a matter-of-fact attitude, telling journalist Bari Weiss on her podcast that he doesn’t concern himself with Newsom’s opinion. He emphasized that his vote was the right call for the battleground state of Pennsylvania, where he serves as a representative for two million residents.
