Florida Parents Arrested After 4-Year-Old Twins Allegedly Shot Themselves

Law enforcement in Florida has arrested the parents of two 4-year-old boys after their children allegedly shot themselves with an unsecured gun in their home. The incident occurred in Orange County, where the twins are now receiving treatment at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital for their injuries, which are described as critical but stable.

Policemen responded to an initial report at AdventHealth East Orlando hospital, where the children had been taken by the parents. The parents, Keishara Goodrum and Maurice Bright, were arrested on charges of child neglect with great bodily harm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, respectively. According to the arrest affidavit, the parents were not present during the incident but reported hearing a loud ‘pop’ from inside their home.

Goodrum stated that she had been drinking the previous evening and had left the gun under a couch cushion, possibly forgetting to secure it. Authorities have called attention to the risks of unsecured firearms, particularly with children in proximity. The case has sparked conversations about gun safety and childproofing in American households.

The situation has drawn attention to broader concerns about the presence of firearms in homes, as well as the responsibilities of gun owners, especially concerning the safety of children. It raises questions about the role of parental supervision and the importance of secure storage to avert similar incidents in the future.
